In a significant step towards enhancing economic relations between Morocco and Nigeria, the government of Kano State has announced an investment partnership with Moroccan institutions aimed at attracting investments exceeding $10 billion (approximately 100 billion dirhams) over the next five years. This partnership focuses on vital sectors such as renewable energy and the development of solid minerals, contributing to the local economy’s growth.
Sanusi Baturi Dawakintufa, spokesperson for the Governor of Kano State, stated that the agreement aligns with the state’s strategy to restructure its economy and strengthen collaboration with Morocco across various fields, including trade, agriculture, and energy. He confirmed that this initiative followed a series of successful meetings held by Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, with several Moroccan officials.
Among the Moroccan institutions involved in the discussions are the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), OCP Africa, and the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce. These negotiations are expected to result in memoranda of understanding concerning investment attraction, financing strategies, and the application of modern technologies in energy storage and distribution tailored to the needs of Kano State.
Additionally, the Casablanca Chamber of Commerce expressed its readiness to support Kano State in renewable energy and mineral development projects, thereby enhancing the state’s competitiveness and driving its ambitious investment goals.
In a related context, the Nigerian delegation held meetings with officials from OCP Africa, one of the world’s largest fertilizer companies. The group expressed its willingness to collaborate with Kano State on agricultural development projects, including the establishment of fertilizer blending factories, developing agricultural supply chains, and supporting local farmers through modern farming technology.
In another step towards regional development, a preliminary partnership agreement was reached with MASEN to assist Kano State in its transition to clean energy, reflecting both parties’ commitment to developing sustainable energy solutions that contribute to economic growth in the region.
