Akheichin: The Architect of Defeats and the Union’s Final Nail

Ikhsheesh: The Architect of Defeats and the Final Nail in the Union’s Coffin
A A

Lead
The Moroccan press stands at a critical crossroads, grappling with an alarming decline under the leadership of Abdelkabir Akhchichen, head of the National Union of Moroccan Journalists. Recent failures in international forums reveal not only a weakened national presence but also signal a broader crisis in press representation and leadership.

The Decline of Moroccan Journalism

Abdelkabir Akhchichen’s tenure has been marked by a stark departure from the once-proud legacy of Moroccan journalism. Instead of advancing its influence, the Moroccan press now finds itself marginalized, struggling to secure even a foothold in international conferences. The saying, “He who lacks fundamental assets cannot lead,” rings painfully true as Akhchichen’s leadership has transformed the national press from a regional exemplar into a neglected entity.

A Series of Disappointments

The situation has deteriorated dramatically. At the 2023 Amman conference, Akhchichen returned empty-handed after failing to secure a position on the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) executive committee. Initially, this failure seemed merely a momentary setback. However, the subsequent Paris conference in 2026 underscored a deeper dysfunction; not only did Morocco fail to gain representation, but Akhchichen finished in the last position among African candidates, while neighboring countries like Tunisia and Palestine secured prominent leadership roles. This humiliation raises troubling questions about the current state of Moroccan journalism.

An Absence of Leadership

The implications of Akhchichen’s repeated failures are profound. His inability to forge strong alliances within the African and Arab spheres raises doubts about his capacity to advocate for the rights of Moroccan journalists. This isolation reflects a deeper crisis of leadership that extends beyond mere lost opportunities. With Morocco absent from the decision-making processes of international journalism, the country risks relinquishing its influence over crucial policies and freedom of the press.

Time for a Systemic Change

Akhchichen has rendered the union ineffective, reducing it to a hollow institution while journalists grapple with an environment fraught with trivial challenges. The art of journalistic diplomacy transcends mere tourism; it requires strategic relationships and an ability to promote a compelling national agenda. Continuing under the current leadership promises only further setbacks. Moroccan journalism, with its storied history, must not be confined to the failures of a singular leader. It is time for a fundamental reassessment of union leadership to revitalize the structure from within, lest the rich legacy of Moroccan journalism be forever tarnished.
