Transportation Minister Abdessamad Qiyouh confirmed that the increase in road transport ticket prices during peak times, particularly during religious holidays, operates within a legal framework that limits the maximum increase to 20% of the base fare.
This statement was made in response to a written question from Member of Parliament Aziza Bouguerra. He clarified that road transport prices fall under organized services that are subject to previous government regulations governing their fares.
Qiyouh noted that the Ministry of Transport adopts a proactive approach to manage transport during exceptionally busy periods by granting exceptional licenses to companies to meet the rising demand for transportation. He stated that during the 2025 Eid al-Adha, 2,606 exceptional licenses were issued, a decrease from 4,154 in the previous year, reflecting a 37% drop attributed to reduced family travel due to the absence of the ritual sacrifice.
Regarding pricing, the minister reiterated that the increase during these exceptional trips does not exceed 20% of the base fare, emphasizing that these measures aim to encourage companies to provide additional seats and ensure the continuity of public road transport services. He added that this financial equilibrium is crucial to cover transportation costs and avoid empty return trips.
In addition, the minister stressed that monitoring prices and ensuring they comply with legal tariffs fall within the jurisdiction of local committees in regions and provinces, which enhance their role during major occasions. These committees coordinate with local authorities to ensure price compliance and penalize violations.
Abdessamad Qiyouh concluded by affirming that the aim of these measures is to meet citizens’ needs in a safe and organized manner, while maintaining service quality and ensuring smooth transport operations at bus stations, balancing consumer interests with the sustainability of businesses operating in the sector.
