Follow-Up

The debate in Germany continues regarding the European Union’s decision to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles starting January 2035, as Brussels remains firm on its gradual transition towards electric mobility.

In this context, Gernot Doellner, Chairman of Audi, deemed the reopening of the discussion around this deadline as a “futile” step, confirming in statements reported by the German press that electric vehicles represent “the best available technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the coming years.” He added that insisting on the continued presence of the thermal engine “erodes customer trust and delays the transition process.”

On the other hand, Volvo reiterated its support for the European deadline set for 2035, urging in an open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen the adoption of “bolder measures” to enhance Europe’s leadership in electric mobility, with participation from 150 industry stakeholders including battery manufacturers and charging station operators.

However, several major players in the German automotive industry, such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Bosch Group, along with the head of the automotive industry association, expressed their concerns, warning of the risks that could affect “wide sectors of the industry,” and calling for a “course correction.”

European regulations state that the sale of new vehicles with thermal engines will cease starting early 2035, with a phased target of reducing average carbon dioxide emissions to 93.6 grams/km starting from 2027, having originally been set for 2025, in order to give manufacturers more time to adapt.

In Germany, voices calling for a review of this decision are growing, reflecting the divide in the sector between those advocating for the continued use of thermal engines and those pushing for an accelerated shift to electric vehicles.
