Akkideal Successfully Conducts First Remote Robotic Surgery between Casablanca and Laayoune

Akkideal Group announced the successful completion of the first remote surgical operation (tele-surgery) in Morocco, performed by Dr. Adel Ouzane, a specialist in urology and robotic surgery, on Friday, May 2, 2025. The operation took place from the International Oncology Center in Casablanca and targeted a patient at the International Clinic of Laayoune, over 1,100 kilometers away, utilizing advanced surgical robotic technology. The group confirmed the patient’s condition is stable and he is expected to leave the clinic soon.

This event marks a pivotal moment in the history of surgery in Morocco, reflecting Akkideal’s substantial investment in technological infrastructure and advanced equipment. Both medical institutions are equipped with next-generation robots, while the group’s information systems management ensured a high-readiness connection between the two sites, with a response time of no more than 20 milliseconds. To achieve this, SD-WAN technology was employed, supported by two communication lines—one optical fiber and the other via microwaves—providing a safe and stable working environment for the surgeon, as though he were operating from within the Laayoune operating room.

The operation was conducted remotely by Dr. Adel Ouzane, president of the Moroccan Association of Robotic Surgery, while the robot executed his commands with precision. A fully equipped medical team was present in the operating room for immediate intervention in case of a technical emergency, including Dr. Younes Tabari and Professor Adel Malouki, along with Dr. Aziz Khaled, who supervised the anesthesia, and under the coordination of Ms. Sihem Bahatari, the group’s nursing director, who organized the work of the paramedical staff.

In his statement, Dr. Ouzane emphasized that the most important factor is the patient’s safety, noting that what was once considered impossible years ago is now a reality. Dr. Rushdi Taleb, the group’s CEO, confirmed that this achievement reflects Akkideal’s commitment to providing advanced healthcare to all regions of Morocco without exception, considering the operation a qualitative leap towards decentralizing medical services.

This progress enhances Morocco’s position as a leader in regional medical innovation and solidifies Akkideal’s vision to reduce health disparities and ensure equitable access to high-quality treatments.
