Photos: Morocco Reopens Mohammed V Stadium After Comprehensive Renovation According to FIFA and CAF Standards
The Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca returns to the spotlight today after a year of renovations, coinciding with the derby between Raja and Wydad as part of the 26th round of the national championship. This major public event will serve as the first test for the revamped version of this historic sports edifice.
The work began in March 2024 and lasted a full year, overseen by the National Agency for Public Equipment. The project was part of a national program to upgrade sports infrastructure in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 and the World Cup 2030.
The renovation process encompassed all aspects of the stadium. Forty-five thousand seats were replaced, the press box was upgraded, and improvements were made to the sound system, surveillance cameras, and access devices. Four new dressing rooms, warm-up areas, a mixed zone, and a modern central tunnel for players were established.
The grass was replaced with a new hybrid system. The athletics track was completely renewed. The lighting has become more powerful and compliant with international standards. The advertising screens are now digital and modern.
Outside the stadium, sidewalks were repaired, green spaces beautified, outdoor lighting updated, and the surrounding fences and facilities rehabilitated. Special parking was provided for VIPs, a broadcast center was established, and a new ramp for team buses was constructed.
Opened in 1955, the stadium has regained its prominence and now enters a new phase within a comprehensive national vision aimed at making Morocco a regional sports hub.
This dynamic is part of a deliberate policy adopted by the Kingdom to rigorously meet FIFA and CAF standards while enhancing Morocco’s position as a sports center at the continental, regional, and international levels.
Investments are not limited to Casablanca. Construction also includes the Hassan II Stadium in Benslimane, reconstruction of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, expansion of the Tangier Stadium, and upgrades to the stadiums in Marrakech, Fez, and Agadir. Technical studies for these projects have been completed, and actual work will commence after the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.
The postal and Prince Moulay Hassan stadiums in Rabat are also being rehabilitated as part of the same ambitious national project.
