Toubkal National Park: A Hub for Adventure and Eco-Tourism in the Atlas Mountains

Toubkal National Park: A Hub for Adventure and Eco-Tourism in the Atlas Mountains
A A

Toubkal National Park is solidifying its reputation as one of Morocco’s premier natural spaces, attracting thousands of visitors annually. With its ecological richness and the presence of North Africa’s highest peak, it is a favored destination for mountain hiking and peak climbing enthusiasts.

A Natural Haven

Located approximately 75 kilometers south of Marrakech, Toubkal National Park spans nearly 38,000 hectares within the High Atlas mountain range. Established in 1942 as Morocco’s first national park, it is home to Mount Toubkal, which rises to 4,167 meters, marking it as the tallest peak in North Africa.

Key access points to the park include Oukaimeden, the Ourika Valley, and the village of Tachdirt in the Asni commune. These routes intertwine with traditional villages and stunning landscapes that blend mountains, valleys, and waterways.

Rich Biodiversity

The park boasts a diverse biological inventory featuring flora such as the aromatic juniper and holm oak, alongside emblematic fauna including the Moroccan argali and the bearded vulture. It serves as a vital water reservoir, feeding five major basins: Nfis, Guigou, Ourika, Souss, and Drâa.

Growing Tourism Appeal

Tourist guide Mohamed Benaadi highlights the park’s emergence as a significant destination for mountain tourism in recent years, attributed to its varied trails and activities. From mountain trekking and peak climbing to exploring mountain villages and experiencing local lifestyles, the park provides rich opportunities. Notably, the Ourika Valley serves as a focal point for numerous Moroccan and international visitors.

Strategic Conservation Efforts

Hanane Karfi, the park’s director, affirmed that the National Agency for Water and Forests is implementing a comprehensive program under the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” strategy. This initiative aims to enhance the park’s tourism and ecological allure while preserving its natural resources and biodiversity, all in alignment with supporting the economic and social development of local communities.

The program focuses on ecological protection and rehabilitation, the reintroduction of endangered species, the development of infrastructure for eco-tourism, local capacity building, and promoting green economics alongside participatory governance.

Through this balance of natural resource conservation and leveraging local potentials, Toubkal National Park is establishing itself as a leading destination for environmental and sustainable tourism, exemplifying how to harmonize environmental protection with local development in the heart of the Atlas Mountains.
