Rising Temperatures Elevate Fire Risks: Regions in Morocco on Alert

Rising Temperatures Elevate Fire Risks: Regions in Morocco on Alert
A A

As Morocco braces for a scorching weather spell, the National Agency for Water and Forests has issued a stark warning regarding the heightened risk of wildfires. Updated forecasts reveal a serious threat across numerous regions from July 6 to July 12, 2026, underscoring the urgency of preparedness in the face of escalating heat.

Mapping the Danger Zones

The agency’s latest risk assessment has been meticulously developed using precise scientific data. The analysis incorporates factors such as forest cover types, flammability potential, climate forecasts, and the unique topographical characteristics of each area. This proactive approach aims to thwart potential wildfires and bolster the readiness of stakeholders.

Regions at High Risk

According to the assessment, areas designated with an extreme risk include Berkan, Nador, Taourirt, Jerfay, Ifrane, Taounate, Taza, Khénifra, Hous, Essaouira, Agadir Idawtanan, and Taroudant. These regions are particularly vulnerable to fire outbreaks, especially amid the anticipated heatwave.

Moreover, the agency has classified provinces such as Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, Larache, Wizan, Tangier-Assilah, Tetouan, Mdiq-Fnideq, Jerada, Oujda-Angad, Fez, Kenitra, Rabat, Sale, Skhirate-Témara, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Chichaoua, and Midelt as facing a high level of risk. Meanwhile, the provinces of Al Hoceima, Driouch, Meknes, Al Hajeb, Boulemane, Sefrou, Sidi Kacem, and Khemisset have been assessed as having a medium risk.

Call for Vigilance

In light of these alarming projections, the National Agency for Water and Forests urges residents and workers in close proximity to forested areas, as well as vacationers and visitors, to exercise maximum caution. They are encouraged to avoid any activities that may ignite fires and promptly report any sightings of smoke, flames, or suspicious behavior to local authorities.

Environmental and Economic Stakes

This warning coincides with a notable rise in temperatures across the nation, creating conditions that significantly elevate the likelihood of wildfires and their rapid spread. Adhering to preventive measures will be essential for protecting Morocco’s valuable forest resources and minimizing environmental and economic damage.
