The Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication has announced an extension of the art exhibition titled “Eye and Effect” by the prominent artist Mustapha Ajjam, now running through July 15. The decision comes in response to the enthusiastic turnout since the exhibition’s opening, aimed at providing more opportunities for art lovers to engage with Ajjam’s work.

A Gathering of Artists and Intellectuals

The exhibition has attracted a distinguished crowd, including renowned artists and intellectuals from the field of visual arts. Notable attendees included painter Aziz Sayid, caricaturist Arabic Sabban, and poets Mohamed Hafid, Salah Bousserif, and Mohamed Belmou. Media personality and writer Bouchaib Debbar also graced the event, along with various artists, researchers, and an audience passionate about visual arts.

A Diverse Artistic Experience

Showcasing 24 paintings of varying sizes, the exhibition explores the beauty of Arabic calligraphy, reinterpreting it within visual spaces that blend aesthetic and philosophical dimensions. This artistic endeavor investigates the relationship between seeing and effect, positioning the script as both a visual form and a cultural symbol ripe for interpretation.

According to the exhibition’s introductory paper, Ajjam’s work resurrects Arabic script as a living artistic element that navigates the realm between memory and imagination, engaging viewers in a visual dialogue. The script transcends its linguistic function, evolving into an artistic medium rich in symbolic and aesthetic significance.

The Central Theme: The Arabic Letter ‘ العين’

Central to Ajjam’s work is the letter ‘عين’, which symbolizes vision, perception, and contemplation. This choice forms the backbone of a visual impact that invites interpretation and meaning reconstruction. Through this, the artist raises questions about the relationship between the eye as a tool for sight and the letter as a repository of rich significations in Arab culture, establishing a foundation for an artistic experience that examines the horizons of expression and creativity.

Ajjam’s artworks also aim to establish a visual narrative that celebrates Arabic calligraphy, continuing the traditions of contemporary calligraphic art by blending Sufi dimensions with aesthetic thought. This fusion taps into the expressive power of Arabic script, creating a visual language that resonates emotionally with viewers and prompts them to reflect on beauty, meaning, and impact.

Significance of the Extension

The decision to extend “Eye and Effect” underscores the success of this artistic venture and its significant cultural engagement. With growing interest in calligraphic art as a defining area of contemporary Moroccan creativity, the exhibition continues to foster a vibrant dialogue around the importance and relevance of traditional forms of artistic expression in modern contexts.
