Global Dialogue on AI Governance Kicks Off in Geneva

As international efforts ramp up to establish guidelines for artificial intelligence (AI) usage, Morocco’s Minister Delegated to the Head of Government for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Falah Saghrouchni, has opened the inaugural Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva. This pivotal event, hosted by the United Nations, brings together representatives from over 170 countries to address pressing decisions around digital ethics and technology’s impact on society.

Context: Pioneering AI Governance

Slated for July 6-7, the dialogue aims to forge a collaborative international approach focused on the safe and responsible deployment of AI technology. Key topics on the agenda include efforts to bridge the digital divide, protect children, ensure the security of intelligent systems, and facilitate developing nations’ access to the opportunities emerging in this sector.

Morocco’s engagement reflects its commitment to the “AI Made in Morocco” vision and the “Maroc IA 2030” roadmap, which aim to position the kingdom as a proactive player in the development of responsible and sovereign AI technologies. The Moroccan delegation also includes Ambassador Omar Zniber, the country’s permanent representative to the UN office in Geneva, and Ambassador Omar Hilal, Morocco’s representative to the UN in New York, highlighting the nation’s diplomatic and technical presence on this international stage.

Strengthening Franco-Moroccan Ties in AI

Amid the conference activities, Minister Saghrouchni held bilateral talks with French Minister for AI and Digital Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot. Discussions centered on enhancing collaboration between Rabat and Paris in digital transformation and AI, focusing on building innovative partnerships, sharing expertise, and boosting local capacities.

The Moroccan minister announced an upcoming meeting scheduled for mid-July in Rabat, aimed at deepening ties in the digital domain. She emphasized that both countries share a vision centered on developing human-centric AI that respects privacy and strengthens digital sovereignty while maintaining active participation in international efforts related to the ethical implications of technological advancements.

Implications for Digital Sovereignty

The focus on responsible AI governance resonates deeply in a world where technological advancements outpace regulatory frameworks. By advocating for an ethical approach to AI, Morocco not only positions itself as a regional leader but also aligns itself with global standards that prioritize human rights and data privacy. This dialogue in Geneva serves as a crucial platform for establishing norms that can ensure equitable access to AI benefits, particularly for developing nations.

The conversation around AI governance is not just academic; it has tangible implications for policy-making and international relations. The stakes are high as countries navigate the complexities of technological innovation, making it essential for Morocco and its partners to lead by example in fostering an inclusive digital future.
