Cuba Sees Highest Protests Since 2022 Amid Energy and Living Crises

Cuba Sees Highest Protests Since 2022 Amid Energy and Living Crises
A A

Cuba has witnessed a significant surge in civil unrest, with a record 253 protests occurring in June alone, according to the non-governmental organization Cubalex. This alarming increase has been attributed to worsening energy shortages and deteriorating conditions in water and healthcare services.

A Month of Daily Unrest

Cubalex’s monthly report indicated an average of eight protests per day in June, peaking on June 19 with 31 protests—the highest recorded in a single day since the organization began documenting them in 2022. This spike coincided with an ongoing electricity production crisis that continues to plague the island.

Protest Hotspots

The capital city, Havana, was the epicenter of the demonstrations, accounting for 176 protests. It was followed by Santiago de Cuba with 35 and Villa Clara with 17. Protesters employed a variety of tactics, including road blockades, burning waste and tires, and throwing stones at police stations and banks, highlighting the depth of discontent among the population.

Increased Security Crackdowns

During the same month, the organization documented 319 instances of security interventions, which included arbitrary arrests, harassment, threats, and illegal summonses. Many of these incidents affected individuals already deprived of their liberty, with reports of inadequate access to healthcare among those detained.

A Deepening Economic Crisis

Cubalex noted that the economic deterioration has exacerbated social inequalities, particularly impacting the elderly and families lacking financial remittances. The organization criticized the government’s economic reforms instituted in June, asserting that they prioritized reorganizing the economy and tightening financial controls rather than providing urgent relief to the most affected populations.

These developments unfold against a backdrop of escalating economic and energy crises in Cuba, marked recently by two nationwide blackouts. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) predicts a 6.5% contraction in the Cuban economy by the end of this year, further complicating the challenges facing the Cuban populace.

As citizens continue to voice their frustrations, the government’s response will be crucial in determining the future of Cuba’s social and economic landscape.
