The 27th edition of the Gnawa and World Music Festival kicked off in Essaouira on Thursday evening, enveloped in celebratory rhythms and vibrant festivities. An animated procession featuring the sonorous “guembri” and drums wound its way through the city’s historic alleys, culminating at Moulay Hassan Square, drawing a large crowd of Moroccan and international attendees.
Cultural Procession Highlights Diversity
The parade commenced at Bab Doukkala and showcased a melange of Gnawa performers alongside artists representing the Hamadcha and Aissawa traditions, infused with an array of Moroccan musical expressions. Traditional chants and rhythms filled the air, merging with the fragrant smoke of incense, embodying the spiritual essence and joyous atmosphere of this rich musical heritage.
This vibrant march underscored the diverse array of costumes, dances, and musical instruments on display, illustrating the evolving nature of Gnawa music. Notably, the increasing presence of women in musical groups and the participation of children and youth carrying “guembri” signaled the continuity and intergenerational transfer of this artistic legacy.
Festival’s Role in Cultural Preservation
Numerous participating Gnawa masters emphasized the festival’s vital role in safeguarding this art form from fading into obscurity. They credited the event with giving Gnawa music an international spotlight, opening new horizons for appreciation both within Morocco and abroad, owing to the growing interest in the genre.
During the opening ceremony, Naïla El Alami, the festival’s director and producer, affirmed that Essaouira has become a global cultural hub that fosters connections among diverse peoples and cultures. She described the encounter and openness to the ‘Other’ as a uniquely Moroccan choice reflecting values of coexistence and diversity.
El Alami further articulated the festival’s commitment to preserving the heritage of Gnawa masters while nurturing new generations of artists. The initiative aims to enhance dialogue between Moroccan music and various global artistic expressions through training programs and cultural partnerships.
A Fusion of Global Sounds
The evening concluded with a musical performance that harmoniously blended the rhythms of Gnawa with melodies from Rwanda, France, and India. This artistic display celebrated cultural diversity and highlighted music’s remarkable ability to transcend borders and unite people across the globe.
