Strengthening Public Enterprises: Morocco’s Path to Economic Resilience

Morocco’s Finance and Economy Minister, Nadia Fettah, has reiterated that the ongoing reforms of public enterprises aim not to highlight past failures, but rather to enhance their economic and social effectiveness within the national economy. This strategic approach comes at a crucial time as the kingdom strives for economic recovery and social advancement.

Context: A Shift in Approach

The reform initiative reflects Morocco’s commitment to transforming its public enterprises into more agile and coherent entities capable of supporting major projects aligned with the broader goal of establishing a robust social state. These reforms are designed to facilitate a successful economic turnaround and ensure that public institutions can meet contemporary challenges.

Positive Trends in Public Enterprises

Minister Fettah pointed out encouraging indicators from public enterprises over the current legislative term. Notably, there has been a 40% increase in revenue and a staggering 98% rise in investment volume. The net result has also improved significantly, reaching 26.6 billion dirhams, despite facing difficulties and challenges throughout 2022.

A Modern Management Approach

Morocco is adopting a progressive approach to managing its state portfolio, treating public enterprises as a cohesive strategic asset. This paradigm shift aims to optimize their performance and amplify their economic impact, underscoring the government’s intent to foster a more effective and sustainable model of state involvement.

Future Aspirations

Fettah emphasized that the core objective of these reforms is to transition towards a more efficient and sustainable economic model. This framework not only supports Morocco’s development goals but also aligns with the nation’s aspirations for a forward-thinking social state. The transition is critical as Morocco positions itself for future growth and resilience amid evolving economic landscapes.
