In a bid to secure the sustainability of marine resources, state secretary Zakiya Driouch has called for enhanced participatory governance in the small pelagic fishing sector. Her remarks came during a recent seminar in Casablanca, emphasizing the necessity of balancing economic development with the protection of fisheries.

Towards Sustainable Fishing Practices

At a seminar convened in Casablanca, Zakiya Driouch, the state secretary for agriculture and fisheries, urged industry stakeholders to adopt a collaborative approach to managing small pelagic fisheries. The event brought together representatives from professional fishing organizations, processing units, and wholesale fish traders, alongside governmental officials and marine experts, all focused on sharing scientific insights and exploring sustainable practices for this crucial sector.

Economic Significance of Small Pelagic Fisheries

Driouch highlighted that small pelagic fisheries are vital to Morocco’s maritime economy, generating approximately 3 billion dirhams annually and providing over 32,500 direct jobs. This sector not only contributes to the local economy but also plays a significant role in supporting industrial, logistical, and commercial activities along Morocco’s coastlines. The production of sardines, a staple in Moroccan diets, underscores its importance in ensuring food security for the nation.

Environmental Challenges and Stakeholder Engagement

The state secretary pointed out that environmental changes, overexploitation, and shifts within marine ecosystems necessitate an ecological approach to fishery management. She stressed the importance of open dialogue and information sharing among stakeholders to maintain marine resource sustainability. This collaborative strategy aims not just to address current challenges but also to lay the groundwork for future resilience in the face of ongoing environmental changes.

Commitment to Collaborative Governance

The seminar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the small pelagic sector through transparent and responsible governance frameworks. Driouch emphasized her agency’s role in fostering a cooperative ecosystem that aligns with economic and social development goals, ensuring that the rich marine resources are preserved for future generations.
