The autism center in the region of قلعة السراغنة stands out as a pioneering model for specialized care aimed at children afflicted with autism spectrum disorders. This initiative encompasses educational support, therapeutic tracking, and family assistance, all framed within the second phase of Morocco’s National Human Development Initiative to aid vulnerable populations.
A Comprehensive Approach to Autism Care
The center is dedicated to fostering the integration of children into school and community life, providing tailored medical and semi-medical services along with individualized educational programs that cater to the unique needs of each child. This multidisciplinary team also extends support to families, alleviating the psychological and social challenges often associated with autism.
A Growing Presence
Operated by the Autism Center Association of قلعة السراغنة, the facility accommodates 65 children, including 16 girls, under the guidance of 12 specialized educators and six medical and semi-medical professionals, complemented by four support staff. Children benefit from rehabilitation programs, sensory and cognitive stimulation activities, as well as exercises aimed at enhancing communication skills, independence, and social interaction.
Financial Commitment to Development
The National Human Development Initiative’s contribution to this project amounts to over 6.2 million dirhams, with allocations of 4.2 million dirhams for the construction of the center, more than 1 million dirhams for equipment, and 440,000 dirhams for operational management. An additional 150,000 dirhams has been earmarked for 2026 to further develop the center and acquire a vehicle for transporting beneficiaries, costing 379,800 dirhams.
Fostering Inclusive Practices
According to Nour Eddine Namroushi, a social work officer in the province, the center represents a structured social initiative that effectively meets the needs of children with autism and their families, thanks to partnerships with various institutional stakeholders that have facilitated the provision of quality local services. Educator Zahra Ittaran emphasizes the individualized approach to treatment, focusing on developing communication skills, independence, motor skills, learning, and social interaction, while actively involving families in the supportive process to ensure continuity of learning beyond the center’s walls.
In addition to educational and therapeutic services, the center aims to promote awareness by fostering a culture of inclusivity and supporting families, thereby enhancing opportunities for children with autism to develop their abilities and integrate more fully into society.
