A surge in drug-related activities has prompted police operations in northern Morocco, leading to significant seizures and arrests. In recent days, law enforcement agencies in the regions of Selouan and Souk El Arba have targeted illegal drug trafficking, underscoring a broader commitment to combat organized crime.

Crackdown on Drug Trafficking

On the evening of June 10 and into the early hours of June 11, police launched two coordinated efforts against drug trafficking in the cities of Souk El Arba and Nador. The first operation took place in the rural area of Selouan, where authorities intercepted a utility vehicle with false registration plates. The vehicle contained 40 bundles of hashish, weighing a total of 1,280 kilograms, although the driver managed to evade capture.

Arrests and Seizures

The second operation was carried out in collaboration with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance at the entrance to Souk El Arba. Here, a 31-year-old man was apprehended in the act of transporting 590 kilograms of hashish, also concealed in a vehicle using counterfeit registration. Background checks revealed that the suspect was already wanted nationally, with an arrest warrant issued by police in Tangier for alleged financial crimes.

Ongoing Investigations

The detained individual is now under judicial supervision while investigations continue, guided by the appropriate public prosecutor’s office. Authorities aim to uncover all details surrounding these drug trafficking cases and identify further connections, as well as potential accomplices involved in this illicit trade. This multi-layered approach highlights the Moroccan government’s resolve to dismantle drug networks and curb the escalating issue of substance abuse in the region.

As Morocco intensifies its stance against drug crime, the recent arrests represent a critical step in addressing not only the trafficking itself but also the wider implications for regional security and public health.
