In a move that has sparked outrage among lawyers, Morocco’s Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Wahbi, made remarks deemed “irresponsible” and “insulting” to the legal profession. The Moroccan Bar Association has responded by announcing a comprehensive strike from June 15 to 21, 2026, aimed at protesting against what it calls incitement and defamatory rhetoric.

The Growing Rift Between Lawyers and the Judiciary

The tensions between the Moroccan legal community and the Minister of Justice have escalated following Wahbi’s controversial statements. The Moroccan Bar Association issued a stern message condemning the minister’s allegations, which they see as part of a broader attempt to undermine the integrity of the legal profession. The association deplored what it described as “demonizing rhetoric” and unfounded accusations leveled against both lawyers and their institutions.

In a statement released by the Bar Association, the organization made clear it would not sit idly by in the face of what it termed “repeated missteps” from the minister, whether during legislative sessions or at public events. This comes at a time when there is heightened scrutiny regarding the government’s approach to legal reforms, and concerns over the independence of the judiciary are on the rise.

A Defining Moment for the Legal Profession

To address these critical issues, the Bar Association convened a meeting with representatives from the Parliament’s Justice and Legislation Committee. This session provided a platform to discuss the ongoing legislative changes affecting the legal profession alongside the minister’s incendiary remarks.

The professional body highlighted that Wahbi’s comments represent not only irresponsible allegations but also damaging characterizations that threaten the profession’s standing in society. This narrative emerges from a series of statements that the Bar Association believes are harmful to the public’s perception of legal professionals and fundamentally undermine respect for institutional authority.

Defending Professional Integrity

Criticism also fell upon Wahbi for what the Bar Association characterized as attempts to diminish the role of lawyers while tarnishing their reputation in public discourse. They argue that this negative portrayal is part of a misleading discourse that justifies one-sided choices in the management and reform of the legal sector.

The Bar Association asserted the importance of the Mutual Insurance Fund for Lawyers, framing it as a significant social achievement that ensures health coverage for lawyers and their families. They emphasized that the fund operates under strict legal oversight within the framework of Morocco’s social protection initiatives, pointing to official reports that validate its effective governance.

The statement concluded with a firm commitment from the Bar Association to maintain unity among lawyers and their representatives, calling for constructive dialogue rather than escalating conflicts. The association urged responsible engagement from all institutions involved, especially in light of the critical situation that demands cooperative dialogue.
