African Union: “Morocco Essential in Combating Transnational Crime”

African Union: “Morocco Essential in Combating Transnational Crime”
A A

Lead

At a recent meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, Morocco reaffirmed its pivotal role in combating transnational organized crime on both the African and global stages. The Moroccan delegation highlighted its leadership in international initiatives and emphasized the need for a coordinated African response to this evolving threat.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The Moroccan representatives presented a comprehensive overview of the country’s efforts, particularly in 2023, when Morocco assumed the presidency of the International Narcotics Control Board. They underscored the significance of multilateral partnerships, especially with the G4 group comprising Morocco, Spain, France, and Portugal. This coalition aims to enhance regional cooperation in fighting cross-border crime, alongside Morocco’s active participation in the Global Alliance Against Synthetic Drugs launched this year. These efforts have led to notable successes, including major drug seizures and significant actions against criminal networks.

Managing Irregular Migration

Ambassador Mohamed Arouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa, emphasized the nation’s proactive measures against irregular migration, which have thwarted numerous attempts and dismantled numerous smuggling networks. Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has taken a leading role in managing migration issues in Africa, notably through the launch of the African Migration Agenda and the implementation of structured national strategies.

Call for a Coordinated African Response

The urgent need for a unified response to organized crime was a central theme of Arouchi’s address. He cautioned that transnational organized crime now represents a structural factor destabilizing the continent by blurring the lines between conventional crime, political violence, and armed conflicts, whether in physical spaces or online. Arouchi pointed to the increasing interconnectivity between criminal networks and armed terrorist groups, highlighting the direct threat they pose to national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

A Collective Responsibility

In conclusion, Arouchi called for a concerted effort at national, regional, and continental levels to combat organized crime effectively. He stressed the importance of shared responsibility and cooperation in tackling these challenges, urging African nations to unite their efforts to secure peace and development across the continent.
