Morocco’s preparations for the 2030 World Cup are on track, according to Transport and Logistics Minister Abdel Samad Kayouh, who recently assured that major infrastructure projects are making significant progress. Key developments include enhancements to the railway network and a substantial boost in airport capacity to accommodate international expectations.

Enhancing Connectivity Ahead of the World Cup

In a recent address to the House of Councillors, Minister Kayouh highlighted that railway projects are advancing steadily. This includes upgrades to high-speed trains and regional services, along with plans to connect the new Mohammed V Airport with major cities such as Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech. Notably, the high-speed train line is set to reach Marrakech by 2029—a crucial step in modernizing the nation’s transport infrastructure.

Airport Capacity on the Rise

To better align with international standards, Morocco is doubling its airport capacity, increasing it from 40 million to 80 million passengers. This expansion is vital not only for the World Cup but also for enhancing the overall tourism landscape in the country. The government’s commitment to upgrading airports signifies a focus on attracting increased global visitors and ensuring a seamless travel experience.

Logistics Zones: A Strategic Initiative

Kayouh also announced plans for the development of logistics zones across various regions, totaling 750 hectares. This initiative aims to strengthen national economic competitiveness and improve supply chain efficiencies as the country gears up for the global event. Such logistical enhancements are critical for supporting both local industries and international stakeholders.

Addressing Road Safety Challenges

Despite the positive strides in transport infrastructure, Minister Kayouh acknowledged the pressing issue of road safety. The rising number of accidents, particularly among motorcyclists—who account for 44% of traffic fatalities—poses a significant challenge. Factors contributing to this increase include traffic law violations and a growing vehicle population. The Ministry recognizes its responsibility to tackle these safety challenges and is committed to enhancing road safety measures.

Conclusion

As Morocco lays the groundwork for the World Cup, the focus remains on transforming transportation and ensuring safety for both residents and visitors. The success of these initiatives will not only shape the upcoming tournament but also have lasting impacts on the country’s future economic landscape.
