Morocco Strengthens Its Aviation Hub Role Amid Global Challenges

Morocco is enhancing its position as a regional and international aviation hub, with Marrakech hosting the fifth Global Symposium to Support Implementation (GISS 2026) under the auspices of King Mohammed VI. This event underscores the nation’s commitment to advancing civil aviation while actively participating in global efforts for safety, security, and sustainability in air travel.

A Reflective Commitment to Global Standards

Transport Minister Abdel Samad Guioh emphasized the significance of the symposium, describing it as a reflection of Morocco’s trusted status in the international arena and its unwavering dedication to developing the civil aviation sector. Guioh noted that the theme, “Regional Solutions for a Global Impact,” highlights an increasing awareness of the importance of collaborative regional approaches to address sector challenges.

In light of rapid global growth in air travel, projections indicate that the number of passengers will soar from approximately 5 billion in 2025 to cerca 14 billion by 2050, driven by economic growth and improved infrastructure. Morocco is gearing up for this boom, having welcomed over 36 million travelers and recorded approximately 270,000 aircraft movements in 2025. The country now boasts a robust air transport network with more than 170 international destinations serviced by over 70 airlines.

Infrastructure and Air Safety Advancements

Morocco’s modern infrastructure comprises 18 international airports adhering to global standards, with Mohamed V International Airport serving as a pivotal hub linking Africa to the rest of the world. The Moroccan national carrier, Royal Air Maroc, plays a vital role in expanding international connections across a network of over 90 destinations.

Minister Guioh revealed that the National Airports Office is working under the “Airports 2030” strategy to expand capacity from 40 million to 80 million passengers annually. Additionally, Royal Air Maroc is implementing an ambitious plan to modernize its fleet, aiming for about 200 aircraft by 2037.

The nation has also garnered an impressive 87% compliance rate with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards, showcasing the robustness of its regulatory framework and effective governance within the sector.

Digitalization and Environmental Commitment

In its bid to enhance passenger experience, Morocco is leveraging digital technologies, including advanced passenger data processing systems and biometric tools to streamline operations at airports. This shift is designed to accelerate procedures and improve service quality.

Furthermore, the country is committed to environmental transformation within the aviation sector, promoting the use of sustainable aviation fuel and developing renewable energy projects, including green hydrogen, aiming for long-term carbon neutrality.

A Booming Aviation Industry

On the industrial side, Morocco’s aviation sector is witnessing rapid growth, with around 150 companies employing over 25,000 individuals and generating revenues nearing 26 billion dirhams. This progress solidifies the nation’s integration into global value chains.

In closing, Minister Guioh highlighted the critical importance of investing in human capital. He announced the launch of a training program to enhance skills in the civil aviation field, stressing that international collaboration and knowledge exchange remain essential pillars for building a secure and sustainable aviation sector capable of meeting future challenges.
