African Atlantic Pipeline Agreement Signed by Morocco and Nigeria This Year

Historic Pipeline Project Set to Transform Africa’s Energy Landscape

Morocco and Nigeria are poised to sign a landmark intergovernmental agreement this year, culminating a long negotiation process for a major gas pipeline project. Officially named the Atlantic African Gas Pipeline, this ambitious endeavor, with projected investments of $25 billion, aims to reshape energy alliances and elevate economic connectivity between West Africa and Europe.

An Ambitious Vision Takes Shape

The momentum for this project has surged following the successful completion of preliminary feasibility studies and engineering designs. Amine Benkhadra, General Director of Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, confirmed in a recent Reuters interview that the official signing of the agreement will occur within 2026. Following the agreement, focus will shift to establishing the project’s executive and financial structure. Two pivotal steps are planned: the formation of a joint management company based in Morocco, partnering with Nigeria’s national oil company to oversee financing and construction; and the establishment of a regulatory body in Abuja, involving representatives from the 13 countries the pipeline will traverse, ensuring legislative and political coordination.

The Scale of the Project

This unprecedented initiative will stretch an impressive 6,900 kilometers, combining land and sea segments with an annual capacity of 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Notably, half of this volume is designated to meet Morocco’s growing domestic demand, significantly enhancing the country’s energy sovereignty and accelerating its transition to cleaner energy sources while reducing reliance on coal. The other half is earmarked for European markets, with initial gas flows expected by 2031.

Strategic Implications for West Africa

The pipeline’s significance extends beyond mere infrastructure; it is projected to serve as a developmental catalyst, providing a reliable energy source to alleviate chronic electricity shortages in West African countries. This stability could foster genuine economic integration across the region. Meanwhile, amidst ongoing global geopolitical crises impacting traditional supply chains, international financial institutions and European markets view the Atlantic African Gas Pipeline as a sustainable strategic alternative. Notable interest in funding from influential entities such as the European Investment Bank and Gulf sovereign wealth funds underscores the project’s potential to position the region as a vital player in global energy security.

The Atlantic African Gas Pipeline is not just an ambitious project; it represents a fundamental shift in the strategic energy landscape of Africa and a pivotal step toward their economic aspirations.
