At the forefront of discussions on sustainable development, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leïla Benali, recently participated in the OECD’s Biomaterials Forum in Turkey. The two-day event, co-chaired by Morocco and Turkey, focused on stimulating investment and growth through strategic partnerships, underscoring the crucial role of Africa in the global minerals dialogue.

A Shift in African Mining Dynamics

During the forum held on April 28-29, 2026, Benali showcased Morocco’s ambitious reform agenda in the mining sector, asserting the country’s commitment to engaging in global discussions on biomaterials. As Africa deepens its integration into the global economy, Benali emphasized Morocco’s unique position as a bridge between African and European markets while being open to various global opportunities.

Benali pointed out that Africa’s identity is evolving from being a mere exporter of raw materials to becoming a vital partner in innovation and value-added production. This shift illustrates the continent’s aspirations to actively contribute to the transition towards a green economy and sustainable development.

Establishing Responsible Mining Standards

Highlighting the significance of African unity in environmental and social governance, Benali referred to the African common framework on standards adopted by mining ministers during the recent international mining conference in Marrakech. This framework is poised to become an essential continental reference for promoting responsible mining practices and sustainable development.

The need for cohesive standards reflects a growing awareness among African leaders of the importance of establishing a responsible mining sector that aligns with global sustainability goals. By collaborating and setting forth clear guidelines, African nations will be better positioned to manage their mineral resources effectively while benefiting their communities.

Towards a New Global Framework for Biomaterials

In her discussion, Benali called for the establishment of a new global system for biomaterials, one that prioritizes greater equity, transparency, and balance. She argued that fostering international cooperation and reducing unnecessary trade barriers are essential steps in building resilient supply chains capable of weathering global crises and market fluctuations.

As nations navigate the complexities of transitioning to sustainable economies, such initiatives are vital in promoting not only local interests but also global environmental goals. By advocating for a structured approach to biomaterials, Benali is effectively positioning Morocco as a leader in the burgeoning field of sustainable development on a global scale.
