Recent reports indicate that U.S. President Donald Trump was considering a military escalation against Iran just a week ago but has since shifted toward a strategy emphasizing economic pressure. This change comes amid Iran’s ongoing economic crisis, with the U.S. administration looking to intensify sanctions while keeping the door partly open for negotiations.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Trump has informed Axios that negotiations with Tehran will only be limited. He stated that the U.S. is closely monitoring Iran’s situation, which he described as one marked by significant inflation and a lack of financial resources. In a related post on his Truth Social account, Trump shared a graphic illustrating the decline of the Iranian rial against the dollar, reiterating that Iran has been engaged in “51 years of bad behavior” and is currently devoid of funds.
These remarks suggest a notable shift in the U.S. approach from potential military confrontation to leveraging Iran’s deteriorating economic conditions as a pressure tactic. While military options remain on the table, the focus for the moment appears to be on increasing economic sanctions to elicit a change in behavior from Tehran.
