Morocco Leads the Supply of Green Beans to Ireland and Strengthens Its Presence in European Markets

The Moroccan agricultural sector continues to enhance its presence in European markets, having topped the list of green bean suppliers to Ireland in 2025. This marks a significant shift in the agricultural trade landscape and highlights the growing dynamism of vegetable and fruit exports.

According to recent data from EastFruit, Moroccan green bean imports to the Irish market reached approximately 817 tons, showing a strong increase of two and a half times compared to 2024, and nearly seven times the import volume recorded in 2023. This unprecedented level allowed Morocco to become the leading supplier of this product for the first time.

This performance is particularly notable given the nature of the Irish market, which heavily relies on imports and imposes strict quality standards as well as transportation and storage conditions. Access to this market is an indicator of the competitiveness of Moroccan products.

In recent years, Guatemala has been the main player in supplying Ireland, accounting for more than half of the imports between 2019 and 2024, along with Kenya and the United Kingdom also being among the suppliers, while Morocco’s presence has been limited and often channeled through indirect routes via the British market.

However, this balance began to shift starting in 2024, following a decline in Guatemalan exports due to logistical disruptions related to the Panama Canal and the European Union’s tightening of pesticide residue standards, which opened the door for new suppliers to enhance their presence in the market.

In this context, Morocco successfully capitalized on the opportunity in 2025, raising its share to 36.2% of Ireland’s total imports of green beans, surpassing traditional competitors and reflecting its evolving position within European supply chains.

This advancement is attributed to several factors, including geographical proximity to Europe, improved logistical infrastructure, and the competitive edge of Moroccan products in terms of quality and pricing.

Moreover, this achievement is not limited to green beans; Morocco previously recorded significant results in tomato exports to Ireland during the last agricultural season, further indicating its expanding influence within the European fresh produce market.

Observers believe that this achievement reflects the kingdom’s successful agricultural strategy in diversifying export markets and enhancing added value, while emphasizing the need to continue investing in cold chain logistics, improving transportation conditions, and ensuring ongoing compliance with European environmental and health standards amidst intensifying competition and fluctuations in international markets.
