Macron Criticizes American Policy: Gradual Abandonment of Allies and Ignoring International Norms

President Emmanuel Macron expressed regret on Thursday that the United States is “gradually abandoning” its allies and “ignoring international norms,” speaking of a growing “new colonial aggression” in diplomatic relations.

Macron’s remarks were made during his annual speech to French ambassadors at the Élysée Palace, as European powers strive to coordinate a response to U.S. foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere, following the arrest of ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and Donald Trump’s intention to annex Greenland.

The French president stated, “The United States is a strong power, but it is gradually abandoning some of its allies and ignoring the international norms it was still advocating until recently.”

He added that “the performance of multilateral institutions is steadily declining. We are living in a world of great powers that have a genuine desire to share the world among themselves.”

Macron also voiced his rejection of “new colonialism” by major powers and “defeatism” in light of recent global developments.

He stated, “We reject new colonialism and new imperialism, but we also refuse dependency and defeatism.”
