Traffic Accidents Claim 36 Lives

Reports indicate that 36 people lost their lives, and 3,109 others were injured—122 of them seriously—in 2,308 traffic accidents that occurred in urban areas during the week spanning from November 24 to 30.

According to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security, the main causes of these accidents, listed in order of frequency, include driver inattention, failure to yield, pedestrian negligence, insufficient safe distance, excessive speed, disregard for stop signs, lack of control, changing lanes without signaling, illegal lane changes, driving in prohibited directions, driving on the left side of the road, ignoring red traffic lights, driving under the influence, and improper overtaking.

Regarding traffic monitoring and enforcement, the source stated that security services recorded 49,460 violations, prepared 7,947 reports forwarded to the public prosecutor’s office, and collected 41,513 settlement fines.

The statement noted that the total amount collected reached 9,027,250 dirhams, while the number of vehicles impounded was 4,800. Additionally, 7,947 documents were confiscated, and 578 vehicles were subjected to suspension.
