The Rabat Court of Appeals upheld the initial ruling against activist Ibtissam Lachkar, sentencing her to two and a half years in prison and imposing a fine of 50,000 dirhams for “insulting Islam.”

The case dates back to May when a photo circulated on Facebook showing Lachkar wearing a shirt that included a phrase deemed offensive to the divine.

Public reaction to the image prompted the public prosecutor at the Rabat Court of First Instance to initiate an investigation, leading to a decision on August 10, 2025, to detain her under precautionary measures.

After completing the investigations, the prosecution decided to charge Ibtissam Lachkar while she remained in custody. The Court then delivered its initial verdict on September 3, which was confirmed yesterday on appeal.
