3 Billion Centimes to Support Print Media Rights… Digital Media to Join Soon

A press conference held at the National Institute of Music and Choreography revealed that the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights has secured nearly 3 billion centimes aimed at enhancing photocopying rights for print media, with plans to soon extend this system to include digital media.

During the meeting, the Director of the Bureau, Dlal Mohammedi Aloui, explained that efforts are underway to amend Law 2.00 concerning the protection of copyright and related rights, allowing digital media platforms to benefit from these rights as part of the ongoing transformation in the media sector.

The spokesperson disclosed that these resources have been accumulated since February 2024 through revenues linked to the import of copying and printing machines, pointing out that pressure from certain professional lobbies has contributed to delays in disbursing these rights.

Dlal Mohammedi Aloui confirmed that the Bureau of Copyright does not receive any financial support from the government, relying instead on the collections it gathers. She emphasized that the goal is to protect the rights of journalists as creators, rather than merely as news relayers.

In this regard, it was reiterated during the meeting, held in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, that a digital platform will soon be launched to enable journalists and media institutions to declare their articles and register in the new system, as this is a prerequisite for benefiting from photocopying rights.

The official also highlighted that these rights pertain to “journalistic creativity” represented in articles, rather than just the reporting of news, while the inclusion of content from reports and audiovisual materials will be postponed to later stages.

According to the provided information, this initiative aims to strengthen the financial rights of journalists and keep pace with the changes in the media landscape, with anticipation for the integration of digital journalism into the benefits system soon.
