Rabat – On Sunday, April 5, 2026, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection announced the completion of the government program to rehabilitate 1,400 primary healthcare facilities across various regions of the Kingdom. This initiative is considered one of the largest national projects aimed at developing primary healthcare and improving the quality of services provided to citizens, particularly in both remote and urban areas.
This achievement aligns with the royal directives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, aimed at reforming the national health system and ensuring equitable and comprehensive access for all citizens, as outlined in Framework Law 06-22. It also serves the objectives of sustainable development, particularly the third goal related to universal health coverage by 2030.
The project was implemented across 12 regions, with a total investment exceeding 6.43 billion dirhams, benefiting over 20 million citizens. The rehabilitation works included improving the infrastructure of health institutions and renewing medical equipment, as well as enhancing the digital transformation through the widespread adoption of an integrated information system. This system will help organize patient flows, reduce pressure on hospitals, and ensure the effectiveness of healthcare services.
The facilities that benefited from the rehabilitation are distributed across the regions as follows: 127 institutions in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region with an investment of 579 million dirhams, 111 institutions in the Casablanca-Settat region with 511 million dirhams, 90 institutions in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region valued at 408 million dirhams, 139 institutions in the Marrakech-Safi region funded with 664 million dirhams, and 229 institutions in the Fes-Meknes region with an investment of 1.024 billion dirhams. Other regions include Béni Mellal-Khénifra with 143 institutions (667 million dirhams), Souss-Massa with 183 institutions (811 million dirhams), the Oriental region with 164 institutions (723 million dirhams), Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra with 31 institutions (139 million dirhams), Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab with 8 institutions (38 million dirhams), Guelmim-Oued Noun with 119 institutions (591 million dirhams), and Drâa-Tafilalet with 56 institutions (276 million dirhams).
The program did not solely focus on physical equipment; it also implemented standardized criteria that respect the territorial and cultural specifics of each region, ensuring the principle of equality in accessing high-quality healthcare. It also prioritized improving working conditions for healthcare staff, enhancing maternal and child health follow-up, chronic disease management, school health, and the prevention of various diseases.
The ministry continues its preventive maintenance programs for the rehabilitated institutions, the widespread introduction of electronic health records, and the provision of ongoing training for health sector workers while conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the impacts achieved. Future plans include extending this program to cover the entire national network, building new institutions in underserved areas, and developing telemedicine services to reinforce the sustainability of the reform and elevate the quality of healthcare at the national level.
This program exemplifies national investment in health and reaffirms Morocco’s commitment to ensuring comprehensive healthcare for all citizens, bringing health services closer to all regions of the Kingdom and reflecting the priority of public health in national policies.
