Mali: Failed Coup Attempt… and Doubts About Algeria’s Involvement in Supporting It

In a significant development in Mali’s political and security landscape, the transitional authorities launched a large-scale campaign of arrests over four days, targeting at least fifty military personnel, including senior officers and members of the ruling military council, following what has been described as a failed coup attempt to oust the government.

According to reliable security and military sources, most of those arrested belong to the National Guard under the command of Defense Minister General Sadio Camara, amidst local and international speculation regarding his potential involvement in the failed maneuver, although authorities have neither confirmed nor denied these allegations officially.

Reports indicate that among the detainees are prominent figures within the military and state governors, within a tense environment marked by disputes within the military council over foreign policy directions, particularly between proponents of maintaining close ties with Moscow and those advocating for a greater opening towards the United States.

In this context, some analyses suggest that Algeria—viewed as having a vital strategic interest in Mali—attempted to reassert its influence in Bamako by encouraging military and political forces opposed to the military council, in a bid to hinder the growing rapprochement between Mali and Morocco. Observers believe that any evidence of Algerian support for the coup attempt could exacerbate its regional isolation, given the strained relations with several neighboring countries and increasing competition with Rabat in the Sahel region.

So far, Malian authorities have not issued a detailed statement on the investigation’s proceedings or the nature of the charges against those detained, stating only that “anyone found to be involved in threatening the state’s security will be held accountable under the law.” While awaiting the results of the investigations, Mali remains an open battleground for regional and international power struggles, further complicating its internal crisis.
