Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch chaired a meeting on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, in Rabat, for the steering committee of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Water 2020-2027, as part of the regular follow-up on this strategic project.
The meeting aimed to review the progress of the program’s implementation and assess the urgent measures taken to ensure drinking water supply and mitigate irrigation water shortages, in line with royal directives.
At the beginning of the meeting, a presentation was made regarding the status of dam water levels between September 2024 and July 7, 2025, which reached approximately 4.3 billion cubic meters, equivalent to a filling rate of 37.4%.
The committee noted a relative improvement in the water situation but emphasized the need for caution and the promotion of water conservation, especially during the summer season, which experiences significant pressure, with a focus on awareness campaigns, particularly in rural areas.
The meeting also addressed the progress achieved in executing the national program, including:
– The completion of two projects connecting water basins: one between the Sebou and Bou Regreg rivers, and the other between the Oued Mokhazens and Dar Khroufa dams.
– The filling of eight major dams between 2021 and 2025.
– The acceleration of seawater desalination projects, aiming to exceed 1.7 billion cubic meters of purified water by 2030.
– Enhancing drinking water supply in rural areas.
– Reusing treated wastewater for irrigation.
The program for small dams was also revised, and new large and medium dam projects were scheduled in areas that experience significant rainfall.
The Prime Minister urged all stakeholders to intensify their efforts and ensure the program’s implementation within the specified timelines, adhering to royal directives, and stressed the need for harmonization between water policy and agricultural policy.
The meeting was attended by the ministers of Interior, Equipment and Water, Agriculture, and Budget, along with the Director General of the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water.
