Morocco Pulls the Rug from South Africa: Volkswagen Chooses the Kingdom for Electric Car Manufacturing

Volkswagen has selected Morocco as a new platform for electric car manufacturing, a move seen as an industrial gain for the kingdom and a boost to its growing status in the automotive sector.

According to data circulating in economic circles, the German group opted to invest in Morocco instead of South Africa, taking advantage of various competitive factors that the kingdom offers, including advanced industrial infrastructure and geographical proximity to European markets.

This direction aligns with the global company’s strategy to expand electric vehicle production, amidst the ongoing transition in the automotive industry toward clean energy and reducing carbon emissions.

Observers note that Morocco’s selection reflects the attractiveness of the business climate that the kingdom has successfully established in recent years, particularly in the automotive sector, which has become one of its key export domains. Morocco already hosts major factories for several global companies, including Renault and Stellantis.

This international interest is also linked to the integrated industrial structure that Morocco has developed, in addition to the availability of skilled labor and multiple free trade agreements that grant products manufactured in the kingdom access to vast markets.

This anticipated investment is expected to reinforce Morocco’s position as a regional hub for electric vehicle manufacturing in Africa and support the kingdom’s efforts in transitioning towards a more industrial economy reliant on clean technology and innovation.
