The eighth session of the annual general assembly and conference of the African Network of Data Protection Authorities commenced yesterday in Abuja, with the participation of several African countries, including Morocco.
Morocco is represented at this three-day event, organized by the African Network of Data Protection Authorities and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission, under the theme: “Achieving a Balance Between Innovation in Africa and Data Protection and Privacy in Emerging Technologies,” by Omar Seghrouchni, President of the National Commission for the Control of Personal Data Protection.
This conference aims to serve as an appropriate platform to promote best practices in the field of personal data protection and privacy in Africa, by bringing together relevant data protection authorities and decision-makers to discuss current issues.
The conference and annual general assembly provide participants with an opportunity to engage in discussions that will shape the future of data protection in Africa, ensuring that privacy remains a fundamental pillar of sustainable digital development.
Discussions will focus on political frameworks, regulatory strategies, and best practices for creating a digital ecosystem based on innovation, while also considering privacy protection and contributing to sustainable development across the continent.
The agenda includes interactive sessions featuring stakeholders in the field of personal data protection in Africa, addressing issues of innovation, regulatory strategies, and privacy protection in artificial intelligence and financial technology sectors. This event also includes the general assembly of the network, along with the launch of a “white paper” on data management systems in Nigeria.
It is worth noting that the African Network of Data Protection Authorities, established in Ouagadougou in 2016, is an organization that gathers relevant bodies aimed at enhancing personal data protection and privacy as a fundamental human right.
The network aims to promote cooperation, strengthen capacities, and harmonize regulatory frameworks in the area of data protection, to support the right to privacy and establish responsible data governance at the continental level.
