Britain Turns Its Eyes to Morocco as World Cup 2030 Approaches

The United Kingdom has begun actively working to enhance its economic presence in Morocco, seizing the momentum generated by preparations to host the jointly-held 2030 World Cup with Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. While eyes are set on the stadiums that will host the matches, capitals are preparing to finalize strategic deals that reflect broader changes in the global economic influence landscape.

Bobby Gustafson, the UK’s Minister of State for Investment, confirmed that the British Ministry of Business and Trade is committed to supporting companies looking to expand into the Moroccan market, viewing the upcoming World Cup as a pivotal moment to open new opportunities for British exports.

The minister based her remarks on the partnership agreement signed between the two countries following the UK’s exit from the European Union, indicating that the volume of bilateral trade increased to £4.2 billion in 2024, marking an increase of £600 million compared to the previous year.

UK Export Finance expressed its enthusiasm to participate in projects related to the World Cup, announcing a commitment of £5 billion to support investments in Morocco in the near future. The agency considers Morocco a strategic pivot to access African markets, as the region attracts increasing interest from major economic powers.

In October 2024, a high-level British delegation, consisting of representatives from 12 companies, visited Morocco to explore cooperation opportunities and monitor the progress of World Cup preparations, opening new channels for partnership across various sectors. Expectations suggest that momentum in bilateral relations will increase, driven by the overlapping interests brought about by this globally significant sporting event.
