Festival Reviving the Heritage of “Haik Wazzan”

Festival Reviving the Heritage of “Haik Wazzan”
A A

The city of Ouezzane will host the third edition of the Ouezzane National Haik Festival from May 23 to 25, under the theme “Ouezzane… The Essence of Heritage.”

This cultural event coincides with the celebration of “Heritage Month” and is a culmination of efforts aimed at preserving cultural heritage and enhancing national identity at both local and national levels, with a particular focus on traditional clothing, exemplified by the haik.

According to a press release, this festival serves as an opportunity to elevate collective memory, foster a sense of belonging, and create cultural and developmental vibrancy in the region, providing chances for connection, dialogue, and coexistence among various stakeholders and partners.

The festival, as stated by the organizing party, aims to establish Ouezzane as a lively space for cultural exchange and an effective platform in the preservation of collective memory, by reviving symbols of traditional Moroccan attire and recalling their cultural and historical significance.

This cultural event features a rich and diverse program that weaves together cultural, developmental, and social dimensions, showcasing sustainability within a comprehensive vision aimed at deepening awareness of heritage as an intangible treasure, which stands as a key theme of the festival and a notable characteristic of its identity.

For this edition, the Ouezzane National Haik Festival’s management has chosen the theme “Unity in Heritage, Diversity, and Coexistence,” symbolically representing the rich cultural, heritage, and artistic wealth found across various regions of the kingdom, merging into a single entity that reflects a unique and unified Moroccan identity.

This diversity will be present through the “Multicultural Haik Parade,” which will feature representations from different regions of Morocco, with the “Saharawi Haik” as the guest of honor for this edition.

The program for this version will also include a series of intellectual and scientific seminars and training workshops on tourism, heritage, the environment, and solidarity economy, led by academics and experts in the field, along with several students and community activists. Additionally, there will be exhibitions of local products, traditional crafts, photography, and educational and artistic activities for youth, culminating in the “Haik Bride” celebration.
