BBC Report: Algeria Faces Isolation: Eroding Alliances and Diminishing Influence

Oussar Ahmed

A report published by the BBC reveals that Algeria is experiencing unprecedented regional isolation due to sharp shifts in its foreign policy and strained relations with its Arab and African neighbors. The report highlights the escalating diplomatic crisis between Algeria and the UAE following remarks by an Algerian historian on an Emirati channel, which was met with an unethical media attack from Algeria on the UAE. This incident serves as an indicator of deeper tensions between the two countries, fueled by differing stances on regional issues like normalization with Israel and intervention in the Sahel states.

The report notes Algeria’s shift from a traditional policy of neutrality to an attempt to play a more active role, but it clarifies that this change has not yet yielded positive results; rather, it has widened the trust gap with neighboring countries. Relations with Morocco have been severed since 2021 due to the Western Sahara conflict, while ties with Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are cooling due to Algeria’s support for terrorist organizations and its interference in the internal affairs of Sahel nations, compounded by the Malian military junta’s rejection of Algerian mediation.

To the north, the relationship with France is characterized by instability amid accumulating issues like migration and security cooperation. Meanwhile, Egypt, a traditional ally, now seems distant from Algeria’s stance, particularly regarding normalization and relations with Washington, reflecting a lack of genuine Arab coordination that places Algeria in a position of increasing regional weakness.

The article also points to Algeria’s attempts to position itself through alternative alliances with Russia and China, although these moves have yet to materialize into effective partnerships. Even joining blocs like BRICS has not yet provided Algeria with clear strategic support. On the other hand, increased reliance on energy resources, particularly following the Ukraine crisis, has not mitigated the widening gap between Algeria and other influential countries in the region.

The BBC report concludes that Algeria is navigating a rapidly changing regional landscape, while its foreign policy remains tethered to narratives of sovereignty and confrontation with “external enemies,” a stance that may deepen its isolation and limit its capacity for influence. Amid significant regional transformations, the report asserts that Algeria is steadily drifting towards the margins of the political scene in the Arab and African worlds.
