On Saturday, Nasser Bourita, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, held discussions with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shabandi in Baghdad on the sidelines of the 34th Arab League Summit.
This meeting comes after Bourita announced the Moroccan Kingdom’s decision to reopen its embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, which had been closed since 2012. This announcement was made during Bourita’s address, where he represented King Mohammed VI at the Arab Summit in Baghdad.
Bourita explained that this step reflects Morocco’s steadfast historical position in supporting the noble aspirations of the Syrian people for freedom, security, stability, and the preservation of Syrian territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
He also referred to a previous message sent to Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara, adding that the reopening of the embassy will contribute to broader prospects for bilateral relations.
The two ministers had initially met on March 7 during the Gulf Cooperation Council Summit in Mecca, where Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s support for Syria’s unity and territorial integrity, recalling what King Mohammed VI expressed in a previous message to President Ahmad al-Shara, supporting all that fulfills the Syrian people’s aspirations for stability and development.
On April 17, King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to President Ahmad al-Shara on the occasion of Syria’s 79th anniversary of Independence Day. In February, he also sent a message of congratulations to al-Shara upon assuming the presidency of the Syrian Republic during the transitional period.
