The Disintegration of the Opposition Foils the Motion of Censure Following the Withdrawal of the Socialist Union

The Socialist Group in the House of Representatives has withdrawn from the coordination efforts concerning the motion of censure, delivering a direct blow to an initiative that the opposition was relying on to oust Aziz Akhannouch’s government. This withdrawal has revealed the deep divisions within the opposition components and highlighted the lack of a minimum level of coherence necessary to activate effective oversight mechanisms within the parliament.

The Socialist Group has attributed the responsibility for the initiative’s paralysis to other opposition components, accusing them of "disregarding" constitutional mechanisms and displaying an "absence of seriousness" in dealing with oversight practices. It pointed out that discussions have strayed into formal details and media leaks, rather than moving towards a political consensus that ensures a minimum level of credibility and clarity before the public.

The group indicated that it was the first to propose the idea of activating the motion of censure since late 2023 and began actual coordination with other opposition groups in early 2024, despite being aware of the difficulties in securing an absolute majority to topple the government. However, it regarded the motion as a means to open a responsible political discussion on governmental performance and necessary reforms.

Parliamentary sources have mentioned a clear disparity in the positions of the opposition components. While some preferred to delay or completely withdraw from the discussions, others engaged in “media disruption” that hindered the initiative and bogged it down in organizational maze, according to the Socialist Group.

This step reveals, according to observers, objective difficulties in coordination among opposition components amidst a lack of a shared vision and the inability of parliamentary groups to move beyond narrow calculations, thereby weakening their capacity for political influence and effective oversight within the legislative institution.
