The sixteenth session of the Energy Conference was inaugurated today, Wednesday, in Ouarzazate, under the theme “Energy… A Strategic Pillar for Water Security and Sustainable Development,” attended by Aziz Akhannouch, the Head of Government, along with several ministers, experts, and international partners.

In his opening speech, Akhannouch confirmed that Morocco continues steadfastly on the path of energy transformation, placing renewable energy at the heart of its strategy to achieve energy sovereignty and sustainable development, in line with the royal directives.

The Head of Government noted that this event takes place in a global context marked by climate changes and increasing pressures on natural resources, emphasizing that energy is no longer just a tool for economic growth; it has become central to environmental, social, and territorial transformations.

He reported that the Kingdom has been engaged for years in a gradual and sustainable energy transition, investing in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, and recently in green hydrogen. He indicated that Morocco will exceed the target of 52% of renewable energy in the electricity mix before the end of 2026, four years ahead of the previously set timeline.

Akhannouch highlighted that Morocco’s “offer” in the field of green hydrogen constitutes a strategic lever for diversifying energy sources, enhancing national resources, and responding to global investor projects, as called for by King Mohammed VI in his Throne Speech on July 29, 2023.

The Head of Government addressed the close link between energy and water, considering that the water stress experienced in Morocco in recent years necessitates an integrated approach between water and energy policies. He pointed out that the seawater desalination program increasingly relies on renewable energies to reduce carbon footprints and costs, as seen in the Dakhla project.

Akhannouch stressed that the success of the energy transition requires deep reforms, a stable legal framework, broad investment openness, as well as encouraging national expertise, innovation, and scientific research.

In this context, he affirmed that Morocco, under royal leadership, continues to strengthen its partnerships and solidify its position as a regional and international proposal power in the field of clean energy.
