Washington Intensifies Strikes on Iran as Tehran Hits U.S. Bases

Washington Intensifies Strikes on Iran as Tehran Hits U.S. Bases
A A

The escalating military confrontation between the United States and Iran has entered a perilous new phase, as Washington launched airstrikes on Iranian military sites for the third consecutive night. In retaliation, Tehran targeted American bases in Bahrain and Jordan, intensifying fears of a broader regional conflict.

Recent Military Escalations

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the latest strikes lasted about five hours, targeting coastal defense systems, drone and missile facilities, and maritime assets in key Gulf cities, including Bandar Abbas and Bushehr. Iranian state news agency IRNA reported hearing explosions near Bandar Abbas, highlighting the immediate impact of the ongoing hostilities.

Iran’s Response and Regional Tensions

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed responsibility for missile strikes on multiple targets in Bahrain, including a building within the AL-AFB base, as well as vital facilities and U.S. forces at a Jordanian airbase. Confirming the attacks, Jordan’s military intercepted four Iranian missiles, while explosions were also reported in Bahrain, according to Agence France-Presse correspondents.

Political Implications and Economic Fallout

Despite the military escalation, President Donald Trump left the door ajar for potential negotiations with Tehran. However, he underscored the U.S. commitment to controlling the Strait of Hormuz, reintroducing maritime restrictions on Iranian ports. He also announced plans to impose a 20% tariff on shipping vessels passing through the strait in exchange for protection—a proposal that has sparked significant legal debate regarding its consistency with international navigation laws.

Iran has firmly declared its intent to safeguard the Strait of Hormuz, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that the nation has historically been—and will continue to be—the strait’s guardian, dismissing Trump’s proposed tariffs as excessive.

Rising Oil Prices and Diplomatic Challenges

This military escalation has prompted a spike in oil prices, with Brent crude climbing to $84.29 per barrel amid growing concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies through one of the world’s most crucial maritime routes.

On the diplomatic front, Tehran acknowledged that the memorandum of understanding with Washington faces a “crisis,” yet emphasized continued consultations with intermediaries, including Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman, in a bid to de-escalate tensions and avert a broader confrontation in the region.

The unfolding events signal not only immediate security challenges but also far-reaching implications for global energy markets and international relations in an increasingly volatile landscape.
