Spain Issues Temporary Work Permits to Over 609,000 Migrants in Legalization Effort

Spain Issues Temporary Work Permits to Over 609,000 Migrants in Legalization Effort
A A

Spain is taking significant strides towards integrating hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants into its labor market, having recently issued temporary work permits to 609,737 individuals. This action is part of a broader initiative aimed at legalizing the status of those who had applied, out of approximately 1.17 million who sought to benefit from the program.

Context of the Initiative

The Spanish government opened the application window from April 16 to June 30, 2026, targeting migrants who had resided in the country for at least five months prior to the end of 2025 and had no criminal record. Eligible individuals receive a renewable residence permit valid for one year, facilitating their temporary integration into the workforce.

Progress and Statistics

On Thursday, the Secretary of State for Migration, Pilar Cancela, and the Secretary of State for Social Security, Borja Suárez, confirmed that all applicants will receive temporary work permits, allowing them to participate in formal employment while their applications are being processed. As of June 30, roughly 160,000 beneficiaries successfully secured official jobs, with an additional 11,000 having obtained one-year residence permits to date.

Targeted Sectors and Government Collaboration

To facilitate this process, the Spanish government is collaborating with companies in critical sectors such as construction, tourism, transportation, and healthcare. This strategic partnership aims to address labor shortages in these industries by integrating the newly authorized workers into the job market.

Implications for Spain’s Labor Market

This integration initiative not only addresses immediate labor needs but also marks a progressive step in Spain’s approach to migration, potentially setting a precedent for future policy. Successfully incorporating these migrants into the economic fabric could lead to enhanced productivity and growth across the affected sectors, while also tackling societal challenges related to undocumented residency.

As Spain continues to navigate its evolving migration landscape, the outcomes of this program will be critical in shaping both the future of undocumented migrants and the broader socio-economic context.
