Morocco’s Minister of Economic Integration and Employment, Younes Skouri, has underscored the critical need for companies to respect workers’ rights to maintain the country’s labor market competitiveness. He warned that non-compliance with labor laws could drive workers to seek better opportunities abroad, highlighting the urgent necessity for reforms in labor practices.

Upholding Workers’ Rights: A Cornerstone of Morocco’s Labor Market

Younes Skouri recently addressed the Moroccan Parliament, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding worker rights as a fundamental condition for an attractive job market. He called on employers to commit to respecting labor regulations, noting that the international esteem for Moroccan workers is rooted in their dedication and skills. This reputation has made foreign companies willing to offer higher wages to attract Moroccan talent.

The Seasonal Labor Challenge

Skouri pointed out that seasonal work remains a pressing issue impacting both employees and employers. The government’s “Integration” program aims to bolster businesses while enhancing the employment landscape. Additionally, labor inspectors play a vital role in monitoring working conditions and ensuring compliance with the law, providing a crucial oversight mechanism in this regard.

Protecting Security Personnel’s Rights

The Minister specifically highlighted reforms concerning private security guards, whose working hours have been legally capped at eight per day. He urged all stakeholders to ensure this law is enforced, affirming that the judiciary and legal penalties serve as vital tools for upholding the law and protecting this vulnerable group’s rights.

Collective Labor Agreements: A Path to Stability

Regarding collective labor agreements, Skouri asserted that they serve as effective mechanisms for reducing disputes and improving working conditions. He noted that the current government has successfully negotiated 60 collective agreements, representing approximately 80% of the total agreements in force prior to its term, reflecting a significant commitment to enhancing employee relations and workplace standards.

Enhancements for Labor Inspectors

Furthermore, the new framework for labor inspectors includes financial incentives, such as compensation for resolving disputes. Skouri believes these initiatives will strengthen the enforcement of labor laws and promote social dialogue, ultimately benefiting workers and stabilizing labor relations across the country.
