The Moroccan government is taking decisive steps to reform its self-employment system, a move aimed at curbing fraudulent registrations and enhancing economic transparency. With over 350,000 individuals now engaged in legitimate entrepreneurial activities, this initiative seeks to bolster youth employment and foster a fairer labor market.

Reforming the Self-Employment System
During a recent session in the House of Representatives, Younes Skouri, the Minister of Economic Integration, Small Enterprises, Employment, and Skills, detailed the government’s renewed efforts to streamline its self-employment program. Skouri emphasized that this system remains a crucial catalyst for individual entrepreneurship, notably helping young people navigate the job market by providing them with an accessible legal and tax framework for launching their businesses.

Addressing Fraud and Inactivity
The minister noted that ongoing reforms, particularly in social protection and tax policies, revealed a significant number of registered individuals who are not actively engaged in any business activities. Some have exploited the system to evade traditional employment. This prompted a thorough reorganization aimed at filtering out inactive registrants and enhancing the integrity of the program.

Enhancing Economic Credibility
As a result of these reforms, the self-employment system is now more efficient and transparent, housing over 350,000 legitimate entrepreneurs who fulfill their tax obligations. Skouri argued that this not only enhances the credibility of the initiative but also strengthens economic inclusion for targeted demographics, supporting a more structured economy.

Promoting Fair Competition
The government’s initiative is part of a broader strategy to regulate the labor market and combat various forms of employment fraud. By expanding the tax and social protection base, these reforms aim to ensure fair competition and promote a more organized economic landscape. The approach underscores the government’s commitment to fostering an environment where legitimate economic activities can thrive, ultimately benefiting both entrepreneurs and the wider society.
