Rabat Celebrates Andalusian Music at International Festival of Mediterranean Heritage

Rabat Celebrates Andalusian Music at International Festival of Mediterranean Heritage
A A

The International Andalusian Music Festival kicked off Thursday evening at Hassan II Park in Rabat, showcasing a vibrant blend of cultural heritage and musical tradition. Held from July 2 to 4 under the high patronage of King Mohammed VI, the event aims to celebrate and preserve the rich Andalusian musical heritage while reinforcing the cultural ties among Mediterranean nations.

A Celebration of Cultural Heritage

The festival opened to remarkable enthusiasm as the Greek ensemble Aman Rebetiko captivated the audience with a performance that seamlessly fused Greek melodies with the rhythms reminiscent of Granada. Their participation was honored with a commemorative plaque, a gesture reflecting the festival’s commitment to cross-cultural exchange.

Embracing Andalusian Tradition

Among the highlights was the performance by the Gharnati Choir from the city of Oujda, featuring acclaimed singer Nariman Bakui. She delivered a series of traditional poems within a full “Nuba” performance, evoking the original essence of “Tarab” music and its spiritual atmosphere.

Honoring Milestones in Cultural Engagement

Abdelkarim Benani, president of the Rabat Fath Association for Sustainable Development, emphasized that this festival builds upon the successful program “Khamis Al-Andalusiat,” which has played a pivotal role in solidifying the presence and continuity of this musical genre. The festival also marks significant anniversaries, including the fortieth year of the association’s establishment and the twenty-fifth anniversary of the “Khamis Al-Andalusiat” initiative.

Encouraging Future Generations

Vice Secretary-General Nabil Fanjero highlighted how the festival aims to broaden interest in “Tarab” music among younger generations. By facilitating connections with established artists, the event encourages future creativity within this aural art form. Nariman Bakui expressed pride in representing her city at such a prestigious venue, noting that presenting the complete “Nuba” contributes to preserving the authenticity of this art form for future audiences.

The inauguration concluded with a collaborative musical performance uniting both Moroccan and Greek musicians, taking the audience on a transcendent artistic journey from Greece to Granada. The festival’s program also features morning artistic sessions titled “Atayi Dalhadash” at the headquarters of the Rabat Fath Association. The program includes performances by the Tahami Al-Madghari group on Friday and the “Al-Rida” group, which focuses on religious music, on Saturday.

Friday nights will continue with artistic evenings featuring the Mohamed Al-Arabi Al-Marabit Orchestra and the Hamid Agbar Flamenco group. The festival will culminate on Saturday evening in a grand concert celebrating Andalusian music and its rich heritage, featuring esteemed local and international artists.
