Over 347,000 Travelers, 88,000 Vehicles Cross to Morocco via Spanish Ports

Over 347,000 Travelers, 88,000 Vehicles Cross to Morocco via Spanish Ports
A A

As Morocco gears up for the summer travel surge, over 347,000 passengers and nearly 88,000 vehicles have already crossed from Spain to Morocco under the “Marhaba 2026” operation. This significant influx reflects the continued engagement of the Moroccan diaspora, despite a slight decrease in overall travel numbers compared to last year.

Context of the Journey

Launched on June 15 and running until July 6, the “Marhaba 2026” operation has mobilized 1,519 maritime journeys, as reported by Spain’s General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies. Although the number of ferry crossings has dropped by 5.7% compared to the previous year, the stability in passenger and vehicle numbers suggests the critical role these routes play for the Moroccan expatriate community.

Route Performance

The Algeciras-Tanger Med route remains the most frequented, accounting for 46.6% of total vehicle movements. It facilitated the transport of 124,145 passengers and 40,963 vehicles, despite slight declines from last season. The Algeciras-Ceuta route ranked second, with 68,509 passengers and 15,635 vehicles, while the Almería-Nador line reported notable growth, with a 25.1% increase in passengers and a 14.4% rise in vehicles.

Port Activity

Port operations have seen varying trends, with the Port of Algeciras leading in passenger numbers—192,654 travelers and 56,598 vehicles—though this represents a decrease from last year. Conversely, the Port of Almería experienced a substantial uptick, serving 57,319 passengers, a 21.1% increase, along with 14,187 vehicles, marking a 12.2% rise. Valencia’s port also reported increased traffic, while Motril faced the steepest declines.

Humanitarian Support

In parallel to the operational statistics, humanitarian efforts have been notable. Since the operation began, Spanish authorities have provided 229 medical interventions and 1,618 social services to travelers, with a concentrated effort on July 6 alone, when there were nine health assistance cases and 79 social service provisions reported across participating ports.

With these developments, the “Marhaba 2026” initiative not only underscores the vitality of Morocco’s maritime connectivity but also highlights the ongoing need for robust support services to facilitate safe and efficient travel during peak seasons.
