On Monday evening, the Mohamed V National Theater in Rabat launched the fourth edition of the “Moroccan Artisan Treasures” program for 2026, celebrating a decade-long partnership between Morocco’s Ministry of Crafts and Social Economy and UNESCO. Under the theme “Ambassadors of Moroccan Traditional Crafts,” the event aims to safeguard intangible cultural heritage through the transmission of rare artisanal skills to future generations.

Lahcen Saadi, the State Secretary for Crafts and Social Economy, emphasized that Morocco has established a pioneering model that recognizes artisans as “living human treasures.” He noted that the government’s approach has evolved from simply documenting heritage to implementing extensive training programs through 2031, specifically targeting vulnerable groups, including inmates, to foster skill development in traditional crafts.
The Impact of Digital Transformation
During the event, Sharaf Amhimed, Director of UNESCO’s Regional Office for Maghreb Countries, stressed the significance of preserving artisanal heritage in an era of digital transformation. He pointed out that while artificial intelligence can document, it cannot replace the human creativity and manual skills intrinsic to traditional craftsmanship.
Strategic Partnerships for Future Growth
As part of the festivities, three strategic agreements were signed, aiming to launch the “Ambassadors of Moroccan Traditional Crafts” program. This initiative will promote artisanal products with the involvement of personalities from art, culture, sports, and media. Another agreement focuses on integrating program graduates into the workforce, while the third collaborates with the Higher Institute of Dramatic Art and Cultural Animation to train specialists in crafts related to performance arts and scenography.
