French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne has announced the launch of a call for expressions of interest for the ambitious “Mediterranean Bridge” electric interconnection project between Morocco and France. This initiative marks a significant step towards strengthening energy and economic integration between the two nations, with far-reaching implications for sustainable energy supply in Europe.

Context

At a press conference concluding the 15th French-Moroccan High-Level Meeting, Prime Minister Borne underscored the importance of this project. The Mediterranean Bridge aims to create a direct maritime line for transporting clean electricity generated in northern Morocco to France and the broader European market. This initiative comes as part of a broader effort to decarbonize energy sources and enhance energy security for both countries.

Investment and Economic Integration

Borne noted that the project aligns with major investments from French companies and includes initiatives targeting small and medium enterprises, especially in critical sectors such as transportation, energy, and advanced technologies. By integrating Morocco and France into shared value chains, the project promises to foster economic collaboration and mutual growth.

Strategic Advantages for Energy Supply

Experts view the Mediterranean Bridge as a pivotal development, granting France direct access to renewable energy without relying on the existing infrastructure through Spain. This shift not only enhances France’s energy independence but also positions Morocco as a regional leader in the production and export of clean energy. Given Morocco’s vast potential in solar and wind energy, the collaboration is poised to yield substantial benefits for both countries.

Marseille: The Gateway to Green Energy

In this context, French company “Selectra” has identified Marseille as a likely candidate to become the primary gateway for African green electricity into Western Europe. The direct underwater cable linking Morocco and France could solidify Marseille’s role as a central hub in the European power network.

Looking Ahead

This announcement builds on technical consultations that have taken place over the past few years. In April 2025, Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali met with French officials to follow up on the project’s technical and economic studies. They emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among relevant institutions to expedite the project’s implementation.
