Latifa Akharbash Calls for Rebuilding Trust in Media and Strengthening Professional Journalism

Rebuilding Trust in Media: A Crucial Step for Social Cohesion and Peace

As the digital landscape evolves, Latifa Akharbash, President of Morocco’s High Authority for Audiovisual Communication, underscores the urgent need to restore public trust in the media. Speaking at the fourth Global Media Forum in Shusha, Azerbaijan, she warned of the challenges posed by misinformation and the escalating impact of algorithms on information dissemination.

A New Era of Misinformation

During her address entitled “Peace and Truth in the Algorithmic Age: Rebuilding Trust in Media,” Akharbash outlined the significant hurdles facing the global media environment. She pointed out that the business models underpinning major digital platforms are often driven by attention-grabbing content, emotional appeals, and rapid dissemination, leading to new types of conflicts. In this competitive sphere, public discourse has become a battleground where information control shapes public opinion.

Akharbash cited the recent media conflicts surrounding Morocco during the Africa Cup of Nations, highlighting how misinformation campaigns exploited conspiracy theories and hate speech, amplified by social media. Such tactics generated tensions between Morocco and Senegal, destabilizing decades of amicable relations despite their shared history.

The Call for Ethical Responsibility

To combat the prevalence of false information, Akharbash emphasized the need for accountability among media stakeholders. She urged journalists and media organizations to adopt responsible editorial policies that promote self-regulation and ethical use of artificial intelligence in newsrooms. This approach, she believes, is essential for fostering integrity in reporting.

Moreover, Akharbash highlighted the importance of equipping citizens with media and digital literacy tools. Recognizing the ability to discern trustworthy news from deceitful content as a fundamental right, she advocated for enhanced public awareness about working with information and artificial intelligence.

Holding Global Platforms Accountable

In her closing remarks, Akharbash called for the accountability of global digital platforms, which often facilitate the spread of divisive and incendiary content. She argued that recommendation algorithms frequently operate in unbalanced ways, disproportionately affecting users in the Global South.

The international community, she urged, must engage in collaborative efforts to establish media systems that cater to diverse cultural and institutional contexts. Akharbash reinforced the notion that revitalizing professional journalism serves as a critical investment in social cohesion and civil peace.

The Shusha International Media Forum, which began in 2023, gathered government officials, experts, and media professionals from 54 nations, highlighting the forum’s commitment to addressing contemporary media challenges under the auspices of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
