Fes has achieved a remarkable 50% reduction in energy consumption for public lighting, propelled by the widespread adoption of LED technology. This initiative is part of the city’s broader strategy to evolve into a smart, digital, and sustainable urban center.
Transition to LED Technology
During a recent meeting focused on smart cities, Baynis, the head of public lighting for the Fes municipality, reported that over 90% of the city’s neighborhoods are now equipped with LED lamps. The completion of a full transition to LED lighting is expected by the end of 2026, with a maximum deadline set for 2027.
Energy Savings and Maintenance Efficiency
This project has not only led to significant energy savings but has also enhanced the quality of public lighting while reducing operational and maintenance costs. The shift to more efficient and sustainable equipment exemplifies Fes’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure.
Integration of Smart Technologies
In tandem with the new lighting system, the municipality plans to roll out a smart public lighting management system that will facilitate real-time monitoring and control, thereby improving performance and expediting maintenance operations. This technological innovation forms a core component of Fes’s strategy to become a smart city.
Developments in Urban Security and Transportation
Moreover, Fes is advancing its smart city agenda by implementing digital solutions aimed at bolstering urban security. The first phase of installing 700 smart cameras has already commenced, with a target of reaching 1,500 cameras by 2030. In urban transportation, the city is working on establishing five high-quality bus lines, set to become the backbone of its future public transport network, aimed at enhancing mobility and reducing congestion.
Smart Energy Solutions
Mohammed Mokhtari, head of the maintenance and management department at the regional multi-service company Fes-Meknes, emphasized that the development of smart electrical networks is essential for Morocco’s energy transition goals through 2030, promoting the integration of renewable energy sources.
These initiatives underscore Fes’s commitment to accelerating its transformation into a technologically innovative city, fostering energy efficiency, and enhancing public service quality. By doing so, Fes is not only paving the way for sustainable urban development but also improving the quality of life for its residents.
