Farmers Demand Justice as Second National Conference Kicks Off in Rabat

Farmers Demand Justice as Second National Conference Kicks Off in Rabat
A A

A national conference aimed at addressing the myriad challenges facing Morocco’s agricultural sector commenced today, July 12, 2026, at the Moroccan Union of Labor headquarters in Rabat. Organized by the National Union of Farmers, this event is themed “A Strong National Union for the Dignity and Rights of Farmers and Our Country’s Food Sovereignty.”

Contextualizing the Agricultural Crisis

This conference arrives at a critical juncture for Moroccan agriculture, which is grappling with severe issues such as prolonged drought years, escalating production costs, and limited access to water resources. These obstacles are compounded by hurdles in marketing, financing, and social protection, prompting urgent discussions among stakeholders.

Key Discussion Points

Conference participants are set to review a guiding document prepared by the Union, which seeks to analyze the harsh realities faced by smallholder and medium-scale farmers in rural areas. The document outlines several proposals aimed at enhancing working conditions, ensuring food security, and asserting national sovereignty over agricultural resources.

Among the primary demands presented at the conference are the protection of agricultural land, improved access to real estate and water, support for domestic production, the establishment of specialized financing mechanisms for small farmers, debt relief, expanded social security coverage, and the strengthening of agricultural cooperatives along with improved distribution channels for local products.

Evaluating Progress and Setting New Goals

This conference also serves as an organizational platform to assess the Union’s performance in recent years. Participants will discuss the future of labor organizing within the agricultural sector, elect new leadership, and devise an action plan that aligns with the sector’s evolving landscape and meets the aspirations of farmers across various regions of the kingdom.

Farmers and industry experts alike are hopeful that this gathering will provide a robust foundation for addressing the pressing challenges in agriculture while advocating for the rights and dignity of those working tirelessly to ensure the country’s food resources.
